Momentous Moments

The Lodge at Primland's resort honors the beloved land on which it rests, welcoming visitors to an experience among mountains, treetops, and meadows.

Story by Cara Clark

Mist embraces the Blue Ridge Mountains at The Lodge at Primland, as if the land is breathing. The resort reveals itself slowly, through ridge lines and forests, through stillness and sky. This is a place where luxury listens first — to nature, to history, to the feeling of arrival that stays long after guests depart.

The story of Primland begins long before The Lodge ever welcomed its first visitor to the community of Meadows of Dan, Virginia, located on the aptly named “Busted Rock Road.” In 1977, the Primat family purchased the remarkable 12,000-acre stretch of land where Primland sits today. They were immediately drawn to its natural beauty and the rich culture of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. That reverence for place was never casual. It became foundational.

“Wanting to share their love of the place with others, they opened The Lodge in 2009, now the heart and central gathering place of the property,” says Will Rentschler, general manager of The Lodge at Primland, Auberge Collection.

From the beginning, the goal was to honor the land.

“The design was guided by a deep respect for the surrounding landscape — warm, inviting, and intentionally reflective of the region’s natural textures and vistas — ensuring that Primland felt both rooted in its environment and welcoming to all who arrive,” Will says.

That philosophy extends upward, literally, into the night sky. One of Primland’s most iconic features, the Observatory, rises from a repurposed silo, transforming something utilitarian into something transcendent. It was created to celebrate one of Primland’s most extraordinary natural assets — the unpolluted clarity of the night skies. More than an architectural statement, it serves as a symbol of the resort’s deeper intent.

“The Observatory represents our commitment to curiosity, discovery, and a deeper connection to the natural world,” Will says.

Guests gather in quiet awe, whether guided by Primland’s on-site astronomy team or during intimate private viewings. As Will explains, these moments foster “an emotional connection that is both grounding and awe-inspiring for couples and families alike.”

Beauty at Primland never shifts with the hour and the weather, revealing itself in layers of light and shadow amid the quiet. Woven into that serenity is a subtle invitation to explore, reminding guests that wonder here is as much about movement as it is about stillness.

Where Wonder, Design, and Belonging Converge

Inside the resort’s walls, the design continues its conversation with the landscape. A new chapter for Primland was shaped under the creative vision of Chad Dorsey, a Dallas, Texas, architect and designer whose approach elevated the resort without overpowering its surroundings.

“Chad Dorsey’s vision played a pivotal role in shaping a new era at Primland by introducing a sense of relaxed yet refined style that feels both elevated and deeply rooted in place,” Will explains. “His approach was never about imposing design on the landscape but allowing the surrounding environment to lead.”

Rather than imposing structure on nature, Chad, who was raised in Tennessee, let the environment lead. Guided by his philosophy of relaxed luxury, he reimagined public spaces, the signature restaurant, and Hawk Eye, Primland’s first luxury residence. Drawing from both the region’s beauty and his Southern roots, he created interiors that Will describes as “warm, authentic, and quietly luxurious.”

Perhaps nowhere is Primland’s balance of immersion and comfort more apparent than in its tree houses. Elevated among the treetops, they feel less like accommodations and more like private sanctuaries.

“The Tree Houses are one of our most unique offerings, designed to evoke a profound sense of escape,” Will says. “Perched within the treetops, they invite guests to slow down and experience stillness, surrounded entirely by nature.”

Even amidst the foliage, luxury is never sacrificed. The Tree Houses balance remoteness with comfort, offering a beautifully designed retreat where they can feel both connected to the landscape and completely at ease.

As the land opens outward, stillness gives way to exhilaration, and Primland’s sense of adventure reveals itself in sweeping gestures and quiet triumphs alike. Each path, fairway, and trail feels like an invitation — to test limits, to laugh freely, and to create memories shaped by the mountains.

Adventure, too, is woven seamlessly into the Primland experience. Guests arrive eager to explore the outdoors, and the Blue Ridge Mountains deliver.

“Our guests are excited to embrace the outdoors here in the Blue Ridge Mountains,” Will explains. Activities like RTV riding, fly-fishing, horseback riding, and the Aerial Adventure Course quickly become favorites, while the championship-caliber Highland Course continues to draw dedicated golfers. Still, when asked what truly lingers in guests’ memories, Will returns to the Observatory, where private viewings often become “the kind that guests often describe as true core memories, long after their stay.”

“What ultimately makes Primland unforgettable is the feeling of belonging it creates from the moment guests arrive,” Will says.

That sense of connection runs through every layer of the experience.  “At its core, Primland is a family — a philosophy shared by our owners, culinary team, and every member of the staff — and guests are welcomed into that spirit in a way that feels genuine and personal.”

Hospitality transcends service. “It’s about connection, warmth, and an authentic sense of place where you can truly feel a part of the Primland family.”

Long after the mountains fade from view, that feeling remains — quiet, grounding, and unmistakable. Primland is not only a place to visit. It is a place where guests feel they belong.
